The problem

You’re not disorganised. Your tools are.

Notes in one app, tasks in another. Hundreds of tabs left open because closing them feels like forgetting. Workouts in a tracker, conversations locked inside messengers, projects sprawled across boards and folders.

Every app holds a sliver of you. None of them see the whole — and every switch costs you the thread.

The metatag

Write like a person. Query like a database.

Type # anywhere and a word becomes a living object, with fields, relationships and history, without ever leaving the sentence you’re writing. Every entry you log becomes data you can chart, search and review.

One app · five views

Every part of your life, on one fabric.

Four views for the domains of your life, and a fifth that reviews across them. They share one database and one set of metatags, so a single #tag connects a note, a page, a message and a task — and makes every one of them actionable and trackable.

Notes

Write and log at the speed of thought.

Keep a free-flowing journal in Markdown that saves as you type and mirrors to plain files you own — or log in a keystroke with pinned metatags, one-tap records and a global Alt Space dock that works from any app.

Everything stays live

Tag it once. See it everywhere.

A metatag isn’t a label — it’s a real object. Attach #launch-v1 to a note, a web page and a text from Dana, and the project gathers all three. Turn the message into a task, track the time, and review the whole thing in one place.

Principles

Built for a lifetime, not a quarter.

  • Capture first, structure later

Nothing stands between you and writing down what happened. Plain text today can grow fields and relationships tomorrow.

  • Built for low-energy days

Every keystroke is budgeted. Metabrain is designed to work when you’re tired, distracted or unwell — because that’s when you need it most.

  • Resume anything

It holds your context across interruptions, so coming back to a project after a week — or a year — takes minutes, not a morning.

  • Your data, for decades

One local database you own, Markdown mirrors you can open anywhere, and full export. No lock-in, ever.

  • History you can trust

Refine a metatag’s definition without silently rewriting what your old records meant. The past stays true.

  • Keyboard-first, yours to theme

Command palette, fuzzy search and configurable hotkeys everywhere — and a look you can make entirely your own.

Who it’s for

Made for minds that run many threads.

If you’ve ever built a system out of five apps and a spreadsheet, only to watch it fall apart by March, Metabrain was built for you.

  • ADHDChronic fatigueBrain fog

    Low battery, high ambition

Some days every decision costs a spoon. Metabrain is built for those days: log with one tap, capture without deciding where anything goes, and come back to a full record of where you left off, so getting started again never means rebuilding your context from scratch.

    • Quick Log
    • Alt + Space dock
    • Resume where you left off

    The tab archaeologist

You keep tabs open because closing them feels like forgetting. Put a whole research session to sleep tonight, wake it next week exactly as it was, and search your entire history for the page you half-remember from March.

    • Sleep & wake sessions
    • Full-history search
    • Tag pages into projects
  • Day jobSide business4 live projects

    The multi-project founder

Every project lives in a different mix of docs, repos, chats and tabs. Give each one a command centre with its tasks, notes, pages and messages together, and relaunch its whole workspace in one move.

    • Project command centre
    • Workspace relaunch
    • Estimate vs actual
  • SleepLiftsCaffeineMood

    The quantified self

You’ve tracked everything in five apps and never once seen it together. Log any metric in a keystroke with #metatags, then finally answer the real question: does that late coffee actually wreck your sleep?

    • #metatag fields
    • Charts from any tag
    • Review dashboards
  • PapersCoursesPlaylists

    The autodidact

Your curriculum is scattered across YouTube, arXiv, Kindle and a dozen bookmark folders. Collect it in one place, put it in order, mark what you’ve read or watched, and keep your notes attached to every source — even if the original disappears.

    • Web collections
    • Read & watched states
    • Notes on any page
  • FamilyFriendsClients

    The relationship keeper

Years of conversations with the people who matter, split across SMS, Skype and Google Messages. See each relationship as one timeline, link people to projects and notes, and remember what you talked about last time.

    • One timeline per person
    • People as objects

Questions

Good to know.

When can I use it?

Metabrain is a working desktop app in active development. Alpha invites go out to this list in waves — sign up and you’ll be first in line to test it.

What platforms will it run on?

All of them. Metabrain is built on Tauri, which compiles to native apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iOS and Android. The Web view connects to Google Chrome through an extension on desktop.

Where does my data live?

On your computer. Every view shares one local database, your notes are mirrored to plain Markdown files you can open in any editor, and everything is exportable. You own it outright.

Do I have to set up a system first?

No. Start by just writing, add a #tag when it helps, and give it fields when you want to track something. If you’d rather not start from a blank page, Metabrain will ship with templates for common setups — habits, training, reading, projects and weekly reviews. Later, Packs will let you share and import whole setups: metatags and dashboards, Themes that change how Metabrain looks, and Protocols — ready-to-run routines like a training block or a morning routine that you follow and track yourself against.

Twenty years in the making

Metabrain began as a concept between 2003 and 2007: one system to hold everything a person learns, does and intends, and hand it back the moment it’s needed.

That idea is why I started building for the web in 2013, and it’s what I brought to my first hackathon, Google Startup Weekend in Guelph, in 2015. I’ve built several prototypes since. Now, with truly capable agentic development, I can finally build the whole ambitious vision as a solo developer.
